2004 Clarion
Headlines:
From
the Minister
I
believe in fallow periods. Fallow is not when the
idea nor the commitment fade. Instead, they often
harden within shells and caked soil. They get
temporarily grown with the wildness of the greater
world. Like a northern field in winter, fallow
ain’t pretty maybe. Not illumined with great
action or growth perhaps.
But
absolutely important. The dream of great harvest is
not diminished in fallow but increased.
We
can lie quiet, self-nurture, and seek joy in one
another. We can live with compassion, benignly
tolerating the wild tangles of the world and its
harsh winds.
Like
this season of entering the Dark, fallow is a
spirit-fed time. Blessings of time and season, those
given and by our choosing .

**ANNOUNCEMENT**
I’d like to organize a series of Outdoor Family
Fun Days this coming year. I’m thinking of things
like an intergenerational soccer game in the Fall
and a sledding/snow-play day in the Winter. Anyone
have a big, flat field that we could play on? Anyone
have access to some soccer goals? How about a nice
sledding hill and a maybe a place to build a
bonfire? Anyone want to help organize these games?
If you have any interest or offers, please contact
Eve.
Enchanted
Kingdom Returns 29, 30 and 31
Our
non-scary alternative to haunted houses needs lots
of volunteers and materials. Call Eve (772-0043) or
Elizabeth Bonney (498-5007) for more specifics. What
fanciful spaces will be created this year? A Fairy
Princess Room, an Elf Forest, a Middle Eastern room,
an Under the Sea World? Volunteers, dress up
clothing and materials are needed to create these
lovely areas of imagination and creativity. Bakers
and people to take money at the door and assist in
the rooms while Enchanted Kingdom is open are also
needed
Ministry
Programs and Notes
The Adult Discussion Group, Sundays at 9:00 –
10:00 a.m.
meets in the minister’s study upstairs. "The
Meaning and Effects of Fundamentalism" is the
topic for the fall; drop-ins are welcome.
Notes
on upcoming services:
In
August-September, All Souls community members
Dorothy McIver, Howard Clark, Jon Rehmus, Loren
Kramer and Diane Dix and others helped collect over
1000 Greenfield signatures aimed at protecting 10
acres of land in Greenfield. To many concerned,
Native American ancestral remains and the land’s
connection with an ancient village site suggest the
10 acres needs to be split off from a larger
industrial/commercial zone. Many others in
Greenfield disagree, wanting the 10 acres included
in a 45 acre parcel to be marketed to commercial
retailers. The town is scheduled to vote regarding
the matter on November 16, and Monique Fordham,
an Abenaki tribe member and president of a local
sacred site protection organization will speak with
the congregation on October 10.
On
October 24, our guest speaker will be Rev.
Frederico Agnir. Soon to be moving to Florida
with his wife Ruby, Fred will offer reflections from
his decades of service to Greenfield, to the
community college as a faculty member, and to area
churches as a Congregational minister. By the way,
Fred is strongly in favor of commercial development
and bringing big-box discount retailers to
Greenfield! For UUs and the world, it takes all
sorts and a willingness to hear many
perspectives…. Do join us for these rich
opportunities.
And
looking ahead to early November…
Need
to be with people on Election Eve? Feel
free to drop by unannounced to an Election Eve
Open House, Tues., November 2 from 7:30 - 11:00 p.m.
at minister Jon Rehmus’ home in Colrain. We
plan a calm, light-hearted evening of results by
radio (no TV), games & chat, and a U.S. map to
mark up. Bring a snack if you like, and please call
if you need a ride or are bringing children.
Questions? Call Jon (624-3025). Please no
gloating nor rending of garments.
LET’S
CONSERVE OUR
ENERGY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The
Property Committee has given me approval to organize
an All Souls All-Church Winterizing Day, Sat.,
November 6 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. (finish with a
light lunch). All hands are needed to plug the
draughts and end unnecessary heat loss in the
building. Weatherizing materials will be available
and crew work on larger projects will help make it a
fun time. Those who can’t help that day are
welcome to join the larger church effort to promote
good energy use and to report when spaces are either
too cold or too hot.

Antique
All Souls Dishes For
Sale
Last spring Irmarie Jones, David Bigda and Jon
Rehmus were going to have a project to make a little
money for the church. And then Irmarie had her
stroke on April 30. Now, they are planning it again
as a holiday giving event.
High
up in the kitchen cupboard are plates, bought when
the church was built in 1895. The are the ones with
pictures of the church on them. They were made in
England and are valuable because, according the
antique dealer, Doug Bilodeau of South Deerfield,
the company went out of business 100 years ago.
There
will be 27 small plates for $20, 6 large plates for
$30 and one platter for $50. They will be on sale
after the service on November 14 and 21.
